Organizers UEFA is preparing to make the Euro Cup tournament, which ended successfully, even more, exciting next time. UEFA plans to expand the tournament by increasing the number of participating teams to 32. With this decision, UEFA is trying to increase the popularity of the tournament.

In 2016, the Euro Cup was increased from 16 teams to 24 teams. From 2028, UEFA will field 32 of the 55 qualifying nations for the tournament. Authorities declined to comment further as discussions on the matter continue.

The organizers estimate that the tournament will be even more exciting if eight more teams are considered. The tournament, which currently has 24 teams competing, is very exciting. Apart from this, the excitement and popularity will increase when 8 more teams arrive from next year.

From 1996 to 2012, 16 teams competed in the Euro Cup in four groups. From there, the first two teams advance to the quarterfinals. Later the number of teams increased over time. The longer the number of teams, the less likely it is that the number of death groups will increase.

That is another advantage that the organizers see for the 32-team Euro Cup. It can only lead to big teams clashing in the knockout stages. As the number of teams increases as has happened in the Euros this year, it is unlikely that the big teams like France, Germany and Portugal will come together in one group.

UEFA is following in FIFA’s path of raising the number of teams from 32 to 48 from the 2026 World Cup. The growing popularity of football tournaments is forcing organizers to include more teams.

It is not clear when UEFA will officially decide to expand the European Championship. Italy, which hosted the 1990 World Cup, is likely to host Euro 2028. But stadiums need significant repairs to cope with even an event with 24 teams. Italy will also have to prepare other essentials.

Russia, which has hosted the 2018 World Cup, has spent a lot more on infrastructure than it has on hosting. Turkey, which failed to host the tournament in 2012 and 2016, will be able to host another national tournament with another bid.
